I had my first competitive autocross (car race) today. I’ve been doing practice events for a while, but I’d never done a ranked event where you find out how you stack up (at least how you stack up that one day).

On one hand, I’m pretty happy that I did so well on my first timed event. I beat some people who have been doing it for a while, and the guy that beat me is a good driver. On the other hand, I was only 0.2 seconds away from first. Damn! I came so close to winning. Maybe next time.
There are some great pictures from the pro photographer at the event.

The street near our house doesn’t always go in straight line, and there are a few sections where you have to make a quick right, then a left. Traffic always backs up there during rush hour. Tonight, I was coming around the corner and saw a black car with dark tinted windows. Another driver wanted to do a U-turn, but I was crossing right in front of his intended path. We almost collided when the driver realized that I was actually there. I looked at the driver, he looked back at me, and when we locked glares I realized it was Ben Affleck. He mouthed “Sorry” and I just smiled. No harm done here. Just a cool star sighting! Although I did sit through almost half of Gigli. Maybe I should have hit him…

We’re obviously way behind on the Japan posts, and for some reason posting about more recent events seems so much more appealing. Anyway, we’ll finish the Tokyo posts, but first this!
I’ve been doing some work on my older 911; most recently I’ve been trying to remove the old muffler, which is rusted through. The only problem is that the bolts are rusted as well, and they do not want to let go. After three different kinds of penetrant, one ruined socket wrench socket, several failed attempts with regular wrenches, one failed attempt with the Dremel tool, and some minor injuries, I have succeeded in removing one of the four main bolts securing the muffler to the heat exchanger. Here it is next to a replacement bolt:

I managed this using a Craftsman Bolt-Out removal tool, designed specifically for rusted and damaged bolts. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to work for the others. I think I’ll need to drill them out.
